Why was I overcharged at the restaurant?

Restaurant/Eating places overcharge

A 20% additional hold on an authorization happens when a merchant, like Eating places, restaurants or fast food restaurants need to ensure funds cover potential additional expenses such as tips or incidental fees, as the final transaction amount is often unknown when the hold is placed.

This practice, known as a pre-authorization hold, temporarily freezes a portion of your available balance to guarantee payment, even if the actual purchase amount is less than the held amount. The hold is released once the final transaction is settled and the merchant submits the actual charge to your GiveCard.

It usually can take up to a couple of days for the transaction to be cleared, at which point the additional hold will be returned and the transaction history will display the correct amount.

If after the transaction clears, the correct amount is not displayed please contact the merchant to dispute the charges.
